Small Business Canada features Barking Biscuit

Gone to the dogs!
Success Story
Small Business Canada Magazine - Summer 2004

The Barking Biscuit Company was created over five years ago in Kemptville, Ontario, after Sara Harley got tired of the dog-eat-dog world of banking. From bank manager to entrepreneur, she created "grrrreat" all-natural dog biscuits that are taste-tested by humans, but made by hand for canine connoisseurs.

After two years of baking biscuits in her home oven, Sara expanded the business in 2000 and now has an off-site bakery. The biscuits are all-natural, made by hand, and good enough for humans to eat.

The Barking Biscuit Company won the 2002 NEBS award for "Most Innovative Local Business in Ontario". Sara and The Barking Biscuit have been featured in local newspaper and national magazine articles, as well as many television shows and CBC and BBC radio interviews. Check out their Web site under "Our Pack & Pedigree" for copies of some of the articles written.

Showing her creative side, Sara dreams up all the biscuit recipes and names. Lucky pooches can try out these delectable treats: Say Cheese Twists, Itty Bitty Cheese, Peamutty Barks, Itty Bitty Barks, Veggie Wedgies, Itty Bitty Veggie, Yabba D'Apple Doo, Itty Bitty Apple, and Hot Dog! bones.

Marketing is done through t-shirts that were designed by an up-and-coming cartoonist currently attending college. Three designs are currently available: "Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride", "Some days you're the dog, some days you're the fire hydrant", "Tail Spin n. a state of panic or confusion".

There are many dog biscuit companies springing up these days, so what makes The Barking Biscuit Company so unique? They've been in business over five years, expanding slowly and building up a solid reputation with two-legged and four-legged fans. Their ideas are original and their biscuits are so good that some people even eat them! This little company has gone a long way.

Check out the Web site for some more details.

As Sara says: "Thanks for your time, and have a howlin' good day!"

All the best to Sara and The Barking Biscuit Co.
